Introduction: The Call of the Steelpan

Growing up in the vibrant heart of the “font-weight: 400;”>Caribbean, the enchanting sounds of the steelpan, also known as steel drums, was a staple of my childhood. These rhythmic melodies weren’t just background music; they were the soundtrack of my dreams. Despite my deep yearning to master this captivating instrument, financial constraints within my family of six meant that my aspirations had to wait.

A Different Path: From Wrenches to Melodies

Life initially steered me towards my father’s autobody and mechanic shop. There, I honed a different skill set, turning wrenches and fixing cars. Respectable work, indeed, but it lacked the melodic heartbeat I craved. This period was a detour, not my destination.

First Steps in the Panyard: A Dream Realized

Entering the panyard felt like stepping into a realm of possibilities. My joy was uncontainable, I couldn’t help but wear a broad, joyous smile that stretched from cheek to cheek. It was as though I had stepped into a candy store, and the sweetest treat of all was the opportunity to finally make music with the instrument I had admired for so long. I embraced each moment of those early lessons, soaking up every note and rhythm.Ā Those initial lessons were more than just learning; they were moments of pure bliss, an immersion into a world I had long admired from afar.

Joining Miami Vibez: A Community of Rhythm

The next bold step was joining the Miami Vibez Steel Orchestra in Opa Locka, Florida. Here, I not only honed my skills but also shared them, performing across Miami and Fort Lauderdale. This experience was a testament to my growth and dedication.

Overcoming Challenges: A Veteran’s Musical Pursuit

Despite the joy, the journey wasn’t without challenges. As a service-disabled Post-9/11 Veteran, I faced unique hurdles. Yet, my resolve was steadfast. Utilizing my GI-Bill benefits, I made a life-altering decision to leave an MBA program for a formal education in music at Miami Dade College. This choice, driven by passion, led me to an Associates in Science in Music Business – Creative Performance track.
